How many ways have you seen folks holding the carving knife? In this first photo the knife is being held like a pencil. This hold is very useful when doing very detail cuts. You actually use the knife tip like a pencil, mostly when making stop cuts.
This is an example of the ordinary, traditional hold.
Some times when you wish for a deeper stop cut this hold can be useful.
I've seen this hold used to achieve very tight control and remove a very small chip, from a corner in a carving.
How about some other ways that one holds the carving knife...
