Paring - Slice Cuts

When making a paring cut with the carving knife There is an important technique to be learned. Just to be sure we're on the same page here, I define the paring cut as slicing towards the thumb on the hand that is holding the knife. Hopefully that thumb will have a thumb guard on it. This paring cut should involve a slicing motion with the knife. Many times this cut is used to remove a chip up to a stop cut. Seldom do I use a straight push cut up to a stop cut. When slicing, you have the choice of either "pushing" or "pulling" the knife blade through the wood. There are no rules here. However, always be thinking about blade control. Some times you'll have more control of the blade if you use a "pushing slice". And some times a "pulling slice". Each situation will be different, so always be thinking about knife blade control. The more blade control you have the less likely to have an accident.
