Oatmeal and Rice!
A good tip for beginning carvers from Ol' Thomp:
When you whittle or carve with a knife, think OATMEAL. Oatmeal flakes are about the size of the chips you should be cutting off. Then after you have some experience you can move to RICE!
Of course you need a very sharp blade......
