Carving with a knife -Random TIP

An observation worthy of a tip. As you read, you'll see that no pun is intended. After demonstrating some carving to newer carvers, I have noticed that most attempt to carve with the knife tip. Carving with the tip of the knife is fine for detail, but not necessarily the way to rough, or block out a carving. Use the knife blade to remove wood, with a slicing cut. Learn to angle the blade to achieve the desired cut. When using the knife tip to rough out, several bad things can happen. You may break the tip off. Your carving will have that "picked" at look to it, that should be cleaned up.
