Whittlin Harmony #5 Whittlin Wood

You ever grill up a nice lookin steak only to find it tough? Well, don't be surprised if you pick up a nice looking piece of Basswood, only to find it too hard, or too soft. What to do when this happens? Personally, with the steak, I just cut it up into smaller pieces and chew the crap out of it. But with Basswood, when I come across a piece that is not the way I like it, I throw it into a box for other uses at another time; like when I am compeletly out of wood to whittle/carve. Remember, time is short and whittlin is supposed to be fun. There's no sense in fightin a hard or stringy piece of Basswood. Even from the best suppliers you may get a bum piece of Basswood.

There's another option that I've used from time to time and it works pretty well.

Find an old spray bottle (something like Windex). Mix up a 50-50 mixture of water and alcohol (either medicinal or paint supply kind - not the kind one drinks). Spray the tough wood liberally and close it up in a plastic bag overnight. Tomorrow, you'll have a tender piece.

Thanks Bob for the addition! Sounds like ADOLPHS MEAT TENDERIZER for wood....I know it works, I've just never tried it.
